CHAPTER 20

“You look like you fought a wild cat,” Anabia says when she sees him.

“I… uh… I found a woman in the Wilds.”

Her eyes widen. “A woman? In the Wilds?”

“I know it sounds crazy,” Jan sighs. “She’s a scavenger, I think.”

Anabia raises an eyebrow. “You think?”

“She was running from a group of scavengers; that’s what I know. And she was injured.”

Anabia’s eyebrows stay raised, but her expression changes from slightly amused to concerned.

“Do you know what gang it was? Did they see you? Should I expect them to come knocking on the gates because you took something they think belongs to them?”

“I didn’t see them, and they didn’t follow me, so no, I don’t think you have to worry.”

Anabia nods and gestures at his face. “Nothing of what you said explains the scratches.”

Jan unwittingly touches the biggest one that runs from the edge of his jaw to down his neck.

“Did she attack you?” Anabia guesses.

“She was terrified. She thought I was one of them.”

“She sounds fierce.”

Jan remembers the half-mad look in the stranger’s eyes and nods. “I hope she recovers quickly so she can tell us what happened to her. In fact, I’m on my way to check on her in the infirmary. Do you want to join me?”

“Sure, I can’t wait to see your mysterious woman from the Wilds.”

“I’m curious what you will think of her. Her appearance in the Wilds isn’t the only mysterious thing about her.”

When Anabia gives him a questioning look, he smiles and beckons her toward the infirmary.
